The Home Button on iPhones and iPads provides two main functions; it serves as a way to authenticate Touch ID and more important, as a way for you to return to your home screen, exit apps and more.
With Touch ID, you can unlock your iPhone or iPad with your fingerprint, and you can also use it to authenticate yourself for purchases from the App Store or with Apple Pay.
The Touch ID is a new feature on the following iPhones, iPads:
- iPhone 5S
- iPhone SE
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPhone 6S
- iPhone 6S Plus
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPad Air 2
- iPad Pro 9.7″
- iPad Pro 12.9″
- iPad mini 3
- iPad mini 4
If the fingerprint scanner doesn’t work, it’s possible the home button flex cable and/or the Touch ID sensor are broken.
The Touch ID sensor cable is one in the same with the Home button flex cable, replacing the cable will render Touch ID unusable. This is something you’ll need to keep in mind. The Touch ID Sensor cable itself is tied to the logic board in each iPhone and the fingerprint data is stored on the A7 chip in a Secure Enclave that is only accessible by the sensor itself.
After replacement the new home button will only have the basic functions except the Touch ID function.
