With fast charging, you can charge your iPhone battery to 50% in just half an hour. Apple’s phones have supported fast charging since the iPhone 8 (iPhone 8, X, XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Max, SE 2020, 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max, 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max,), but from the 12 models onwards, they no longer come with an adapter, making fast charging more challenging. (The 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max include an 18W fast charger, but other iPhones do not.)
The iPhone XS, XS Max, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 were sold with a traditional 5W charger adapter, and all three devices come with a Lightning USB-A cable. For the iPhone SE 2020, 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max, 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max the box only contains a USB-C to Lightning cable. Therefore, to use fast charging on the latest Apple phones, you need to buy a 20W+ adapter.
What is Fast Charging and How Can I Charge My iPhone Faster?
In the BlitzWolf Blog, we previously discussed fast charging, which, true to its name, allows your phone to charge faster. However, you need a charger capable of delivering the appropriate current.
The 5W adapter packaged with iPhones is insufficient for fast charging, only supporting normal charging. If you also have an iPad, you’re somewhat better off since it comes with a 12W adapter. This will charge your phone faster, but you still won’t get the maximum benefit from fast charging.
Tip: When buying a charger adapter, aim for one with a power output between 18W and 30W. For iPhones, the maximum charging capacity is 30W, so any extra power from a stronger adapter will go unused.
What Charger Adapter Should I Buy?
If you prefer original Apple accessories, you’ll need to purchase at least an 18W adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable, which costs about £30. Fortunately, many quality third-party products are available on the market for fast charging your iPhone.
Wireless Chargers
What about wireless fast charging? There are a few wireless fast charging pads available on the market, but the technology has not yet reached the level to compete with wired fast chargers.
The maximum power an iPhone can handle is 15W (MagSafe) and 7.5W (Qi). We specifically mentioned Qi and MagSafe separately because the iPhone treats the two charging methods differently. Both are compatible (for iPhones 12 and above), but the MagSafe method charges twice as fast as Qi technology. However, Qi chargers are much more versatile, as they can also be used to charge devices from other brands. It is important to note that to achieve 15W fast charging, you need to use at least a ~20W adapter. Therefore, wireless fast charging will not be as fast as wired charging. Nevertheless, wireless charging is still faster and more convenient than charging your iPhone with the original 5W adapter and cable. Let’s explore the options!
Car Chargers
A few years ago, the lower power of chargers was an issue, but nowadays, with a fast charger, you can almost fully charge your iPhone during a 1-2 hour trip. The latest chargers also function as phone holders and wireless chargers.
