iPhone owners are familiar with Low Power Mode, which automatically activates when the battery drops below 20 percent. However, far fewer people know that this feature can be set at a higher battery level. With this simple trick, devices can last hours longer without charging.

Setting Up Low Power Mode

For some iPhone owners, the notification to turn on Low Power Mode at 20 percent comes too late, and they would prefer to enable the feature earlier to gain valuable extra hours. Fortunately, it is very easy to set up, just follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Battery.
  2. You can also toggle Low Power Mode on or off in the Control Center. Go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls, then add Low Power Mode to the Control Center.

When Low Power Mode is on, your iPhone or iPad will last longer before needing to be charged, but some features might take longer to update or complete. You might also find that you can’t perform some tasks until you turn off Low Power Mode or charge your iPhone or iPad to at least 80 percent, as stated on Apple’s support page.

In Low Power Mode, the following features are limited or work differently:

  • 5G (except for video streaming) on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models
  • Auto-Lock (the default is 30 seconds)
  • Display brightness
  • Display refresh rate (max. 60 Hz) on iPhones and iPads with ProMotion technology
  • Some visual effects
  • iCloud Photos (temporarily paused)
  • Automatic downloads
  • Email fetch
  • Background app refresh

When the device is in Low Power Mode, the battery status icon is yellow. Low Power Mode automatically turns off when the iPhone or iPad’s battery level reaches 80 percent.
